Optical Gas detection by Tunable Diode Laser Spectroscopy

Boreal Laser Inc makes GasFinder gas analyzers for hazardous and greenhouse gases.  The GasFinder analyzers are based on infrared laser "open path" technology and used in a variety of open path (ambient, environmental and safety), stack, vent and process monitoring applications.

Portable GasFinders are light, battery operated and easy to set up and use.

It measures gas concentration over an open path and consists of an integrated transmitter/receiver unit and a remote, passive retro-reflector array. The remote retro-reflector is targeted by the operator using a two axis mount and an on-board visible aiming laser.  Multiple path/point GasFinderMC analyser systems can monitor up to eight paths or points with a single analyzer.

GasFinders are sensitive and selective trace-gas detectors, which can identify and quantify particular trace gases at very low concentrations. They are based on laser spectroscopic methods. This actually means that , the well-known light absorption characteristics of the gas molecules are used to measure the concentration of a particular gas in an unknown gas mixture.

Each gas molecule possesses series of well-defined optical wavelengths at which light is absorbed to a certain degree. These absorption line spectra are unique for each gas, and since they therefore allow the unambiguous identification of that gas, they are often called “fingerprint spectra”. The GasFinder uses these spectra to automatically measure , calibrate and verify calibration with an internal stable reference cell which contains the pure "target" gas.

GasFinders are currently available for hydrogen fluoride (HF), hydrogen chloride (HCL), hydrogen sulphide (H2S), ammonia (NH3), methane (CH4), carbon dioxide (CO2),  hydrogen cyanide (HCN), ethylene (C2H4) and acetylene (C2H2).  Contact us for other species.

Typical applications include Aluminum smelters, Refineries (esp. HF Alkylation), Petrochemical and Chemical Plants, Gas Production and Processing, Bricks and Ceramics.

The detection of trace gases is highly important for many applications in the fields of environmental monitoring, chemical process control, security checking, and bio-medical research. Both portable and fixed GasFinders are self-calibrating, robust, reliable and maintenance free. GasFinders benefits also include fast response, lack of interference from other gases, and a low cost of ownership.

Agricultural Research applications include determining methane or ammonia emissions. These greenhouse gases, that are produced by cattle and landfills are also causing global warming.
